[new] Program Specific Requirements (none / 0) (#1)
by Vanes63 on Thu May 25, 2006 at 06:09:55 AM PDT

My short answer is: I don't know, but I would read my long answer to understand why.

Long answer: even for graduate math programs the requirements are very program specific. In general, a math student can be expected to take the math subject GRE, but not all programs make it a requirement. While still other programs have un-published cut-offs to weed out applications.

Many math students dread taking that particular exam for many reasons, but if you think it will make your application shine if you do well, that may be true. But you should really check out the test material before you decide to take it. I do not know what specific courses you have to take as a mechanical engineering student, but some math programs do not even offer the coursework required to do well on the math subject gre.

I would check out the practice booklet and see whether or not the material was something I thought I could test well on (you'd be surprised what kind of material is on there that a mechanical engineering student may not have had).

If you find yourself still wondering, what can I do to beef up my application? Please check out the articles on summer research programs, letters of recommendations, personal statements and a variety of other topics related to graduate school applications. If you still have time, I'd do a summer research program (some programs do accept newly-minted bachelors students, but they are hard to find) and/or I would work on my letters of recommendation and personal statements. Evaluate why you want to go to school, etc. Do an internship, take some time off, the world is your oyster and you have a lot of options.

Hope this helps.
