I'm currently a senior in computer science, well the first thing I'm doing is I'm doing some research (in both computer science and math) and getting to know my professors and show them my motivation and give them an idea of where I want to go, but I have the major set back that I'm in Korea in the Army and there is no school that teaches proof based mathematics online, so I'm going to have to become a post-bach for a while in order to even compete.

My understanding of graduate school admissions is that for top departments it goes something like this:
40% recommendation letters
30% statement of purpose
20% grades
10% everything else (including GRE subject scores)
0% general GRE scores

Research also looks very, very good to grad departments. Even if you don't have any thing interesting from it. It shows that you know what you're going to be doing for the next five years and you can deal with it.

Where a relatively low ranked school would be look at the GRE subject scores much more heavily, like maybe:
30% grades
30% GRE subject
40% everything else

These are just the feel that I've gotten from all the research I've done on the subject.

The more I learn the more I realize how little I truly know.
