It was hard to read that article -- it feels like a problem with no answers. Actually, I'd suggest that early in grad school might be a good time (before the pressure of a dissertation is in full force), but often people aren't wanting kids at that point. And I suspect with myself, if I had had kids at any point in grad school I would never have finished my doctorate.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people who struggle with fertility, and so waiting until tenure seems like a risky venture (not at all impossible, just one more thing to consider).
