[new] Networking! (none / 0) (#1)
by jvano on Wed Mar 17, 2004 at 03:12:08 PM PDT

One of the key reasons to go to meetings, at least in my mind, is exactly what this undergraduate student experienced - networking with other people in the profession. This includes people who are
  • at similar points in their career,
  • at different points in their career,
  • in similar fields,
  • in different fields,
  • geographicaly near by,
  • geographicaly distant,
  • etc.
Also, not only does networking give you a chance to get to know other people but it can also start getting you known by others which plays a role later in your career for things like getting
  • reserach collaborators,
  • a job (postdoc as well as tenure track),
  • tenure,
  • etc.
Finally, you also have the perk that going to conferences it typically just plain fun! (Unfortunatly, I had the flu last Jan when I went to the AMS/MAA Joint Meetings in Phoenix which did make it a bit less fun.)
