I agree with jkuchen.
Personally, I feel that TAs should be considered as employees. We were contractually obligated to teach the courses to receive our stipends--that sounds like a working relationship to me!
When I heard this segement on NPR and heard the chanslor or whoever it was say that they didn't view TAs as employees because their teaching was part of their "growth" as students it just struck me as complete BS. I think it's bad enouch that TAs often get used as cheap labor, but hearing that they don't even count as employees just seems offensive.
