[new] best prep for analysis (none / 0) (#1)

The best prep for an analysis is to get as much as possible out of the real analysis course you are taking. This means reading and doing all the problems in a good undergrad analysis book before starting the course (I recommend Marsden elementary classical analysis). Showing what you think are correct proofs of problems in the book to a professor to look over is a good idea. Be sure to read and understand all proofs the text gives as well, and try proving them yourself a week later without looking. This is a good idea for the summer before grad school. During the semester, follow everything your prof teaches in a corresponding textbook or lecture notes (or find the subject matter somewhere perhaps Rudin or Royden), and then do homework as you go along. Get a study group together. Everything makes much more sense when you keep up to date during the semester. It allows you to ask questions of the prof as well, even if the prof is not assigning homework. Finally, when the course is done, get an outline of your university's qual exam and recommended textbooks, form a study group and learn these texts, homework and all. Often the exam covers the official outline regardless of what the professor taught. The exam may also include material from undergrad analysis that was not reviewed in grad school. After all this you can start studying practice exams from your own institution. I would recommend you ask a more advanced grad student or postdoc for a hint if you get stuck rather than looking up the solutions here. Keep in mind a correct answer may not look like the answer here.
