You may also be able to negotiate benefits like: 1. maternity/paterniy leave and what sort of pay is available for this (get it in writing!) 2. before tenure leave or a reduced teaching load for the year before you need to submit materials for tenure 3. Released time (1 hour) for applying for a grant and significantly more (say 1 course per year) for getting a grant. Point out that at research institutions where faculty are expected to get grants they have lower teaching loads. 4. Faculty housing assistance: Some universities help faculty buy nearby houses by putting in endowment funds towards the price. The university then owns a percent of the house. Others provide apartments and the size is up to some negotiation. 5. Always check out questions like fertility and adoption coverage especially if you are considering waiting until after tenure to have kids. As for the salary issue, keep in mind $5K upfront is not worth much compared to $1K annually unless you are planning to leave in a few years or you have some serious budget issues right now.
