[new] FAQs / Ask YMN (none / 0) (#1)
by jvano on Wed Apr 16, 2003 at 06:59:40 PM PDT

The following idea was proposed today in a discussion I had with a finishing grad student. I wanted to post it here before I forgot.

We should have a section devoted to asking questions like

  • How should I handle this situation in my job search?
  • How do I apply for an REU
  • How do I write a grant for doing research with undergrads?
but not so much for questions like
  • How do you integrate x sin(x)?
A key feature for this would be to ensure (especially when our readership is still small) that these questions get answered quickly (we should streamline editoral duties but make monitoring this section, along with checking the story submission queue at least once a day part of the new list of duties for a monthly editor).

[new] Question: how "fragmented" is our site? (none / 0) (#2)
by jvano on Wed Apr 16, 2003 at 07:07:18 PM PDT

Dear readers.

We have several different resources on our site (the scoop engine, a searchable (but non-scoop) arcive of all the back issues of the Concerns, current "mailman" archives of recent issues of the Concerns, etc). Do you feel this information is easily accessable and "current" or do you find it "fragmented" and out of date? Any sugestions on ways we can improve our presentation or additional resources (links/faqs/etc) that we can/should provide?

[new] Two other quick thoughts (none / 0) (#3)

Again, posting this so I don't forget them:
  • We should try to doing "interviews" following the same format used on slashdot (have a storie with a call for questions, send on the 10 highest rated questions and then post the responses to these as a followup story).
  • We should try to get some reviews of math books (both "popular" math books as well as undergrad/grad level textbook reviews) posted. Anyone want to write a review of Guillemin and Pollack's "Differential Topology"? =)

[new] Slashdot great model (none / 0) (#4)

I like your slashdot idea. That would make YMN much more organic, less dependent on an "organization" of editors.

Go for it!
