Dartmouth springs to mind personally. They are small but supportive and I am sure there are others. In general I reccomend visiting the school and asking lots of questions of the graduate students about what it's really like there, in particular attrition rates and what the first couple years are like (and its best to ask when the faculty aren't around.) As for the advisor, advising styles vary from person to person within the department. If you know what field you want to study in (I didn't), then find your list of potential advisors at the school. Then you can ask the advisees and perhaps the faculty member questions when you visit Also it may be possible to contact former advisees since most schools list who graduated lately and who they worked with. Good luck with your search.
