[new] Sound advice (none / 0) (#1)
by Emil Volcheck on Mon Oct 20, 2003 at 09:07:28 PM PDT

I think this article contains sound advice, which is quite relevant to math as well as history. The focus on teaching, breadth rather than depth, sense of community are right.

The advice to "be sincere" reminds me of a discussion at a YMN panel discussion in Baltimore in January 2003. When the market is good for applicants, then be sincere about what kind of job you want. When the market is poor for applicants, and you're ready to take other than your favorite kind of position, it makes more sense to sell yourself and say you want the job.
