[new] Wash-Balto Metro Area (none / 0) (#4)
by jkuchen on Sun Sep 08, 2002 at 06:01:38 PM PDT

Although the "war on terrorism" has added positions in various agencies, there's been a plethora of positions available for mathematicians for a while. There's a ton of defense contractors, simulation/modeling companies, and other companies that want the analytical abilities that a PhD mathematician has to offer.

When I did my search in winter 2001, all I had to do was type in "PhD mathematics" at Monster.com, and I had three interviews from four re'sume's in no time. Now that was before the tech meltdown, but I'd imagine that each of those companines (including my present employer) are still looking for people with our abilities.

The only drawback is that a number of the available positions are defense-related. Although many people's attitudes about defense may have changed in the past twelve months (including my own to an extent), those who are uncomfortable with such work (or unable to perform it due to nationality or other roadblocks to a security clearnace) may have a more difficult time finding employment around here.

ObSideNote: If you're looking for work in the DC metro area (or Boston, our other HQ), contact me.
